"Painting Statements" >>> Marks, Music, and Words Critique

Below each of my final 5 marks are a few points that other students made about them.

I was told the dancing quote goes great with this one, they like the swirls and motion in the image, continuance is kind of created by making a circle, the clack spot in the middle is a focal point, the negative space helps it creating more attention for the swirls, and it is feminine .

I was told the goal quote went great with this painting, and I was also asked about the tool i used so i am thinking they really liked this one, they see continuance with the long line taking you off the page, and they like the cluster of lines as the focal point, they feel softness and freeness when looking at the painting.

This picture reminds them of a timeline or a bridge, neither of the quotes fit very well with the painting, There was continuance to them as their eyes continue with the timeline, this one feels more neutral to them since it has mixtures of light and dark, and they also like how i left alot of white space in the painting.

This painting associated very well with my goal quote since the drippings seems to be reaching out like goals do. There is not really a focal point here each of the dots draw you attention to them, they also did not notice any gestalt principle, and their eyes want to keep moving down the page with all of the ink drippings.

This painting went great with the dancing quote because they thought of square dancing. It was more masculine with the darker paint, and they like the small amount of white space that is left, it also looks like closure, keeping your eyes on the painting, and they can tell i used the same gesture, but with different materials.

"Oopsy Daisy" >>> Marks, Music, and Words Process

These are some of the materials that I have been using to make all of my marks. They are all very neat and do completely different things. I love experimenting with them because you never know what is going to be made with the tool.

But today i ran into a bit of a problem. During the painting where we had to get into it as much as possible; I think I got into more than I needed to. I hit my india ink and it fell all over the table!! It was the saddest thing ever! But I started using the table as my pallet, and scooped paint off of it to paint my pictures. I wish india ink did not dry so fast though, the table has its own little abstraction on it now.

"Marking a Statement" >>> Marks, Music, and Words Process

These are the top 5 paintings of mine. One of the paintings I chose as my favorite, was also chosen by the girl who critiqued my paintings. All of these paintings go with my two quotes in very in very unique and different ways.

"Dance like nobody is watching"
The top of the painting has a mark that looks similar to a boot. And the circles remind me of lights in a dance room. The freeness in the rectangles states my quote exactly. To be free and bold, and to be all over the place.

"Goals without plans are only wishes"
The circles in the painting look like goals to me. And they are all surrounded by larger and darker objects, as if there is a plan for the circles to escape. It is like PacMan, and the yellow face always has to have a plan before hand, or it will get caught and loose.

"Dance like nobody is watching"
All of the dots look so free, like they don't care which direction they end up going, as long as they keep moving. And some of them are even joining with others.

"Goals without plans are only wishes"
The dots in the painting look like they are very fierce and know what they are wanting, and allowing some experimentation to leave them and find out if there plan is going to actually work or not.

"Dance like nobody is watching"
This one looks like it could be a line dance with some random people who can't dance in line like all the others. But they are still out there dancing, unlike the ones who are scared of the floor.

"Goals without plans are only wishes"
The line is shaky, but that is how true life is. And when you make a plan you must have goals in it. THis one is kind of like a timeline, with your entire life planned out so that you can actually truly live in your fairytale dream.

**Mine and the critiques pick**

"Dance like nobody is watching"
It's like a cluster of people dancing hiding from the others, so they cannot be seen. But the ones on the outside have no fear at all, and do not care who is able to watch them act like a fool.

"Goals without plans are only wishes"
THe ones that are heavily populated are all of the choices and decisions made by yourself. And there is always going to be some regrets and bed decisions, away from that main group. But you cannot allow this to let you down, because in the long run you have to have downs to achieve your goals.

"Dance like nobody is watching"
There is no care in this one at all. The lines are moving every which way and there jumping up and down with absolutely no fear. The paper is also folded, symbolizing separations in the room, among the dancers and the ones who plainly watch.

"Goals without plans are only wishes"
There are a million different things you can try when fishing for a dream or goal you have in mind. But out of that big pot you must choose the right steps, and sometimes the wrong ones, to follow your true path.

"There's Three More" >>> Marks, Music, and Words Process

Below are my top three favorite paintings.

This is my favorite one. It reminds me of something you would see on your wall at home. I used many different tools to create it. I like to do it this way because it gives it a whole new feeling on it. I like how all of the darker rectangles are not perfect. It looks kind of mysterious to me like the circles are trying to escape but can't. If I could correct anything I would not use the small circles, probably make all the circles the same size. But that is also what kind of intrigues me about it, is that the painting is not perfect.

This is my second favorite. This was also my critiquer's favorite. I like how I did not cover the entire page in paint. I tend to keep on working and unknowingly have an entire page covered. I love smaller lines and less paint. It looks chines-ish in a way. I also like the focus point with more lines than the rest of the painting. I would add a few more lines outside the focus point if I did anything else.

I made this one in my one hour session. Again, I took the idea from a student, dropping paint from above and let it go its own way. This one really intrigues me because there are huge splatters of paint, with small lines running away from them, literally. It also reminds me of connect the dots, they all look like they are trying to find each other. And I don't think I would change this at all, I just let nature take its course after I dropped the ink onto the page.

"The Critiqued Threesome" >>> Marks, Music, and Words Process

Below are the three paintings that were picked by another student

Her favorite. She likes the sticks and the pattern of motion. She said it looks like the closure principle, like as if it is falling. It reminded her of weird looking toothpicks. And each mark had a nice evenness of darkness. And she also said I could make it better by adding a few smaller marks here and there.

Second Place. She likes the pattern of the painting, and how it has very few angles that are not exactly 90 degrees. It reminds her of the antenna on top of a battle ship. But she said I could improve it by making it a bit straighter.

Third Place. This one was a folded sheet of paper. She likes the pattern of it and how the paint and pattern of it stays with the creases. But however, not every crease has ink in it. It has lots of light marks in a swooshing pattern. I could improve it by making it less spread out, into a tighter circle.

"Lefty Loosey" >>> Marks, Music, and Words Process

I picked the method where you had to paint with the opposite hand. Which for me would be my left hand. I think painting abstract type art is much easier to do than trying to write out a sentence with your opposite hand. The mistakes actually help your painting when using the opposite hand. I was also inspired by many of the students in class today. I saw them using different techniques, so I decided to try them out myself.

I listened to Taylor Swift and this time drew them on my larger paper. Below are some of my favorite drawings I made. I feel like I am running out of ideas though, I guess it might be because there are not many of my paintings that I just absolutely adore. The painting below was inspired by a student in the class. I dripped a line of paint onto the paper with my left hand, and then turned the page around so it would have a drip effect on it.

"Quote This" >>> Marks, Music, and Words Process

In WASH on Tuesday we continued with our Marks project. We were also told to bring 10 quotes to class. Below are the two quotes of mine that were chosen:

"Goals without plans are only wishes"

"Dance like nobody is watching"

I really like both of these quotes, and i live by both of them. The one about goals reminded me of a dream, like all of the clouds in the sky and thought it related to goals and wishes.

The painting with the quote about dancing looked like it had movement on the page and it is ironic because there are eyes in the picture.

"The Weekly Lectures" >>> Lecture 9

Tuesday Lecture #9
Pop Art and After

Some pop artists are Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, and Roy Lichtenstein. Honestly, I am not a huge pop art fan. I like the abstract art much more. It seems more like scrap-booking, just clipping different images to make one larger images. They also all use a variety of bright colors, which I am not quite a fan of, I would rather use darker, more relaxing type colors. It is still very neat to see though. The lecture discussed many different artists work throughout pop art, specifying that it came from POPular culture, and it was a reaction against abstract expressionism. This dog is just a picture of pop art that I found on google; he is very cute!
Friday Lecture #10
Survival of Abstraction
After 1960s Art Movements accelerated but Artists lives did not.
Some different art techniques:
-pop
