"The Weekly Lectures" >>> Lecture 11 & Speaker

Thursday Lecture # 11
Modern Sculpture

We discussed many different types of sculptures in class. There are three different types of sculptures:
abstraction-looking for basic essences
construction-putting pieces together
appropriation-incorporating materials that retain outside reference

Alexander Calder makes some very interesting sculptures. They are all mobile, even the ones that weigh about two tons. This is a picture of one of his constructions that is massive. They seem like they take a lot of thinking in them. He was an engineer as well, so he knew everything about balance and weight while making his mobiles.

Friday Speaker
Santiago

Santiago has some very interesting work and they all seem a bit similar to each other. Most of his works are massive paintings that wind around rooms. I really like his use of tape and paint balls to make his paintings. I thought it was very interesting that he did a show in only black and white. It really makes me think about our project we are doing now. Color might be very pretty, but black and white is much more powerful in some aspects.
